FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

QUESTION: Where is Bergeron Field?

ANSWER:
Joe Bergeron Memorial Field is the front field (Little League, 60' diamond) at Michele Park.

QUESTION:
When will I find out what team my son/daughter is on?

ANSWER: If your child is at the Double-A level (age 9) or above, your child's manager will contact you shortly after the draft, which is usually held a week before practice begins.  If your child is at the T-Ball, Rookie or Single-A level (ages 6-8), those teams are usually finalized the week after the draft.  Practices at those levels typically do not begin until after Opening Day.

QUESTION: My six-year-old is an exceptionally gifted athlete, and we believe he/she would be able to play at the Single-A level without a problem.  Could we move him/her up to that level?

ANSWER: With very rare exceptions (caused by shortages in players at a particular level), we do not allow players to "play up" a level.  In general, 5- and 6-year-olds will be placed on a T-Ball team, 7-year-olds will play Rookie Ball, 8-year-olds will play Single-A, 9's and 10's will play Double-A, 10's and 11's will play Triple-A, and 10's through 12's will play Majors.  On the rare occasions where players are allowed to "play up" a level, this will be determined solely by our Player Agent, who will consider the best interest of the child.  Also, if an 8-year-old has played a full season on Single-A baseball (in the spring), and has played in the SYB system for two years, that player may try out for Double-A at a special try-out session held each year.

QUESTION: I would like my son/daughter to play on the same team as his best friend.  Can we do this?

ANSWER: Players aged eight and younger will be placed on teams by the league director, based on the child's school and/or street address.  If you have a special request such as the one above, please contact your T-Ball (age 5-6), Rookie Ball (age 7) or Single-A (age 8) director.

QUESTION: When does the season begin?

ANSWER: Practices usually begin during the first or second week of April for all levels at Double-A and above.  Opening Day is usually held on the third or fourth Sunday in April, after which point all levels will begin to either practice (Single-A and below) or play games (Double-A and above.)

QUESTION: When will the season end?

ANSWER: For T-Ball, Rookie Ball and Single-A, the season will usually end during the third week of June.  For all other levels, the playoffs will begin in the middle of June and extend through the end of the month.  At that point, the season will end when your team has either lost two playoff games or has won the championship.

QUESTION: Will my child receive a trophy at the end of the season?

ANSWER: All children that participate in T-Ball, Rookie Ball and Single-A will receive a trophy at the end of the season.  At the Double-A level and above, only the winners and losers of the championship game will receive a trophy.

QUESTION: What equipment do I need to purchase?

ANSWER: The only equipment you need is a baseball mitt.  And for age 9 and above, athletic supporters/protective cups are required.  All other equipment purchases (bats, helmets, pants, socks, catching equipment, etc.) are optional.

QUESTION: How do I get involved in coaching or managing a team?

ANSWER: Application forms are available at our walk-in registrations in the spring.  Coaches and managers will need to fill out both an application and a CHRI form (background check.)  You can also download these forms on-line and mail them to us.

QUESTION: How are coaches and managers selected?

ANSWER: A special meeting of the Board of Directors decides who will manage at each level, and who is eligible to coach.

QUESTION: What is the difference between a manager and a coach?

ANSWER: Managers organize the team practices and determine the lineups and playing time during the games.  They are responsible for collecting, cleaning and returning the equipment, and are ultimately responsible for the behavior of their team, their coaches and their parents.  Like managers, coaches are responsible for teaching the game to the kids at practices and games, and filling in as manager when needed.

QUESTION: As a parent, what can I do to help?

ANSWER: Support your coaches, as they are volunteering a great deal of time to ensure that your son or daughter enjoys the best possible season.  Help out whenever you can by raking or lining the fields before a game, or picking up trash when you see it lying on the ground.  Practice as often as possible with your child at home, for the better they become at the game, the more they will enjoy it.  And most of all, be supportive of your children as they learn this game, cheer for both sides during the games and be kind to our umpires.  Don't become one of those crazed "sports moms or dads" you read about in the news.

QUESTION: What is the league age of my child?

ANSWER: The age of your child on April 30th is considered to be his/her "league age."  This determines what level your child is qualified to play.
